The Foy Centre, Carlingford, Co. Louth

Situated on the Cooley peninsula, picturesque Carlingford, Co Louth, was traditionally reliant on trade with Northern Ireland to help it thrive economically. With the outbreak of the conflict in the North, Carlingford was economically isolated and, as a result, suffered a downturn in its economy that meant few resources were available for investment in community facilities.

The opening of the Foy Centre in February 2005 represented a significant step in addressing this situation. An initiative of cross-community company Carlingford Community Development Ltd, the Centre is a multi-purpose facility providing hostel accommodation of up to 32 beds, as well as self-catering facilities, meeting rooms, function room/sports hall, and a restaurant.

According to Catherine Woods, Treasurer, Carlingford Community Development Ltd, the facility has been of major benefit to the community. “Not only has it created jobs and brought in tourists, but it has also delivered much-needed spaces for community events,” she said.

A further benefit of the Foy Centre is that cross-border groups regularly use it for overnight stays in the area, which, according to Catherine, is helping play a vital role in re-building Carlingford’s cross-border connections.

The total cost of the Foy Centre project was €1,434,602 / £982,604 The International Fund contributed €345,000 / £236,301 with the remainder of funding coming from ADM/CPA – Peace & Reconciliation, the National Lottery, Clar Programme, and local contributions.
