Are you over 55 years of age and living in Co Monaghan? Then the IFI Older Persons project may be for you. The project, which is funded by the International Fund for Ireland (IFI), will:

- Provide workshops and training in the area of Peace Building, including accredited Peace Building Training

- Bring older people together for cross border cross community social events

- Create opportunities for young people and older people to learn new skills from each other and gain insights into experience of life on the border

Announcing the launch of the project, MID Chief Executive Officer Mr Gabriel O’Connell said, “Anyone living in County Monaghan today who is 55 years of age or older, was an adult when the conflict in Northern Ireland began. They lived through its darkest days and some witnessed the heartache and devastation caused firsthand. We aim to use this project to give these people opportunities to use their past experiences to contribute to reconciliation and bridge building with their peers and with the younger generation growing up today.”

The International Fund for Ireland (IFI) is an independent international organisation which was established by the British and Irish Governments in 1986. Financed by contributions from the United States of America, the European Union, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; the Fund promotes economic regeneration and peace building in Ireland.

The International Fund for Ireland’s development officer, Gwen Lanigan, stated that “The core aim of the International Fund for Ireland is to tackle the underlying causes of sectarianism and violence and to build reconciliation between people and within and between communities throughout the island of Ireland. We are delighted to support an organization like Monaghan Integrated Development to help us to achieve this aim.”

Mr Francis McCarron will be the development worker responsible for the project. The project runs from January 2012 until December 2013 and whilst aimed primarily at Co Monaghan residents, it will also include activities with cross border groups. Mr O’Connell and Ms Lanigan wished Mr McCarron every success in his new position and urged anyone interested to contact Francis at Monaghan Integrated Development’s Castleblayney Office, Tel: 042 9749500, email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
