Cranmore Regeneration Project, Co. Sligo
Cranmore in Sligo town is the largest public housing estate in the northwest. A population of over 2,500 occupies 500 houses. This estate and other similar urban concentrations across the border counties present an opportunity to develop greater social inclusion and promote meaningful reconciliation.
In 2003, the International Fund provided a grant of €50,000 / £34,246 towards the preparation of a comprehensive plan for the regeneration of Cranmore that would focus on delivering enterprise development, childcare, and training facilities, as well as improving the local environment, and supporting community development.
The Fund’s support also provided the stimulus for a much wider and significant planning exercise. Sligo County Council has backed the regeneration programme with all of its service divisions contributing to the planning exercise and all relevant agencies – HSE, FAS, Garda, Dept. Social Affairs etc. are actively participating in the process. The County Council has also led a community development drive to ensure proper community input to the consultation, planning and development process.
The outcome of the Fund’s support is a multi-million euro masterplan for the physical and social regeneration on the estate, which is currently with the Minister for the Environment for his approval. Among the proposals are the refurbishment of the County Council housing stock in the estate, the `introduction of multi-purpose sports and recreation spaces, and the development of a neighbourhood centre comprising of community, enterprise, and recreation facilities.
Significant progress has already been made in addressing some of the more urgent problems on the estate. A number of formerly boarded-up houses have been brought back in to use, a community playground has been built, the appearance of the estate has been greatly improved, and a CCTV scheme is due to be introduced in 2007.
