Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation

Glencree Centre for Peace and reconciliation is an autonomous NGO located in Glencree Co Wicklow which is committed to "peacebuilding and reconciliation within and between communities." The centre works to build sustainable relationships between politicians, churches, victim/survivor and former combatants, women's groups, community groups and schoolchildren from Ireland, North and South and from Britain.  The Centre also seeks to involve the 'Southern' voice in the dialogue. 

Glencree provides an inclusive, non-judgemental environment where people can share experiences and build positive relationships. The Centre also seeks to share its learning of the past 10 years with practitioners and activists. Some of the Centre's work now has an international dimension and has included participants from the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Haiti and Colombia.

The International Fund for Ireland has contributed almost €2.7 million / £1.8m to Glencree over the years, supporting a variety of programmes which bring together people from the different communities and train them in combating sectarianism.
As part of the International Fund for Ireland’s Legacy Project, the IFI has recently approved a grant of just under €1.9 million / £1.3m for the completion of developments on the site of the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. The development, which is co-funded by the Office of Public Works, will include a new reception and administration area and will provide additional accommodation for 20 additional visitors.  The grant will also include the refurbishment of the Wicklow Wing where the international volunteers live.  As well as increasing the capacity of the Centre, this refurbishment will help to sustain the Centre’s ability to deliver quality peace and reconciliation programmes long into the future.
