Young people from communities across Donegal gathered at Planet Youth, Ballybofey, to celebrate the completion of the Unlocking Your Potential (UP) Project, a youth initiative delivered by Donegal Youth Service and supported under the IFI’s Personal Youth Development Programme (PYDP).

Launched in July 2021, the project was developed to address gaps in support for 16–25 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET), many of whom face challenges such as mental health difficulties, substance misuse, homelessness or involvement with the justice system. The programme also works with young people from communities vulnerable to polarisation and paramilitary influence, helping build positive engagement and strengthen Good Relations.

Over the course of the programme, UP supported 37 young people from Letterkenny, Ballybofey, Stranorlar, Raphoe, Convoy, Manorcunningham, Milford, Buncrana, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, Killygordon and surrounding areas. The project provided intensive one-to-one support, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Good Relations workshops, personal development, and tailored pathways into education, training, or employment. A core feature of the work has been meeting the needs of each young person individually, offering long-term and consistent support for those dealing with trauma, instability, or limited engagement with statutory services.
